Laura Siegemund’s crafty all-court game and proven ability to extend rallies with slices, drop shots, and defensive variety represent the primary challenge for Liudmila Samsonova on Australian Open hard courts. The 37-year-old German enters with limited 2026 match play after a retirement in Adelaide qualifying, yet she owns a competitive head-to-head record against Samsonova and has delivered first-round upsets at Melbourne in recent years. Samsonova, ranked higher and wielding superior pace and power, typically dictates play with aggressive baseline hitting, but any inconsistency or slow start could allow Siegemund to capitalize on her experience and force errors. Weather conditions and court speed in the opening week remain key variables that could influence baseline rallies and service games.
