A strong El Niño event has created persistently high wind shear and cooler Atlantic sea surface temperatures, suppressing tropical cyclone intensification and driving the current market pricing. As of mid-September 2026, the basin has recorded only five named tropical storms and zero hurricanes, shattering the satellite-era record for the latest first hurricane past the climatological peak around September 10. This activity level sits at roughly 7% of normal accumulated cyclone energy. With the season extending through November 30, forecasters note lingering unfavorable conditions that keep a zero-hurricane outcome plausible, while historical precedent and residual late-season windows support the leading 1-3 range implied by trader consensus. NOAA’s August outlook projected 2-6 hurricanes under below-normal conditions.

If there is no storm categorized as a hurricane in the Atlantic during the specified timeframe this market will resolve to "0".
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or greater (Category 1 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale), as described at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php.
This market may resolve based on the initial NHC advisory reporting a qualifying hurricane regardless of any later advisory, retraction, best-track revision, or reanalysis that revises that storm's intensity downward. The official count will be determined by the NHC (nhc.noaa.gov) advisories.
