Preseason projections for the 2026 FBS rushing leader remain tightly contested because a deep group of returning backs posted elite 2025 production and return to favorable situations. Ahmad Hardy, Kewan Lacy, Cam Cook, Jadan Baugh, Mark Fletcher Jr., LJ Martin, and Caleb Hawkins each ranked among the national leaders last season, while DeSean Bishop, Wayne Knight, Darius Taylor, Isaac Brown, and several others bring proven volume or high-upside workloads. Offensive-line continuity, conference run defenses, and early-season usage patterns will determine which back accumulates the most carries and yards, leaving traders with no dominant favorite and broad consensus that any of roughly a dozen candidates could finish atop the final standings.
