Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo head into their record sixth World Cup appearances with Argentina and Portugal in separate groups, making an on-field matchup possible only deep in the knockout bracket if both advance as expected. Their long-standing international rivalry features respectful yet distant relations, with no history of close personal interactions or handshakes at major tournaments despite multiple opportunities. Both remain central to their national teams amid strong recent form, but the emphasis stays on competitive focus rather than ceremonial gestures, supporting trader consensus that a handshake remains unlikely absent a direct head-to-head encounter or unforeseen off-field meeting during the tournament window.

The 'handshake' must occur while the listed players are on the pitch or the bench area; handshakes in the locker room or other areas will not count. This can occur before, during, or after the match. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No."
If the 2026 FIFA World Cup is cancelled, postponed after August 2, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or no qualifying handshake can be confirmed within that timeframe, this market will resolve to “No”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official match footage and broadcast video; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
