US-Canada interest rate differentials and commodity price trends remain the dominant drivers of USD/CAD positioning, with the pair trading near 1.385 amid expectations of limited near-term Federal Reserve tightening following softer US retail sales and payroll data. Supportive Canadian employment figures and energy prices have bolstered the CAD, while scheduled 50% US tariffs on select Canadian goods effective August 19 introduce downside risks to exports and the currency. Traders are monitoring July CPI releases and broader monetary policy signals for shifts in rate path expectations, which historically correlate with moves of several hundred basis points in the exchange rate. Volatility has stayed contained within the 1.38–1.42 range recently, consistent with forecasts pointing toward modest CAD appreciation by year-end.
