Mertens, the higher-ranked Belgian with a stronger recent grass-court record including a 2025 's-Hertogenbosch title, faces Samsonova in the Berlin WTA 500 round of 32 on a surface that typically rewards power serving. Samsonova leads the head-to-head 2-0, though prior meetings occurred on hard courts, and she enters after dropping her last four matches overall plus an early grass exit in London. Mertens has shown better 2026 grass results and consistency heading into the event, while Samsonova's recent form and ranking around No. 35 create a closely contested matchup where trader consensus reflects Mertens' edge on current surface momentum and overall results.
