No. 18 seed Liudmila Samsonova entered this Australian Open first-round clash as the higher-ranked contender with a potent baseline game thriving on Melbourne's fast hard courts, shaping trader consensus around her favored status. Veteran Laura Siegemund, however, carried strong momentum from her recent 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-4 upset of Samsonova in Adelaide the week prior on identical hard courts, extending her head-to-head edge to 2-1 on the surface amid a tied 2-2 overall record. No injuries or withdrawals noted; Siegemund's doubles-honed variety, net play, and renowned resilience posed realistic upset threat in a matchup prone to extended rallies and three sets.
