Pablo Carreño Busta's physical issues forced his retirement at 6-4, 3-0 against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the Winston-Salem Open first round on hard courts, ending the Spaniard's participation less than a week before the US Open. The 35-year-old, ranked near 72 and a former tournament champion in 2016 with a strong hard-court history, entered after a mixed hard-court swing that included a Cincinnati win over Machac but losses to higher-ranked players. Vallejo, the 22-year-old Paraguayan ranked around 61-70 with recent main-draw success and a 10-9 record, broke effectively early and capitalized on the veteran's discomfort in a match that highlighted the rising player's momentum versus Carreno Busta's experience edge on the surface.
