The 20-year-old Uzbek grandmaster has surged 31 rating points to 2776 and entered the world top five, extending his momentum with a 2-1 mini-match win over defending champion Gukesh Dommaraju in rapid and blitz play during the Grand Chess Tour. Gukesh, at 36.5%, enters as the titleholder but has posted disappointing recent results, including a fourth-place finish and joint-last showing that dropped him outside the elite rankings. The upcoming best-of-14 classical match later this year pits Sindarov’s peak form and head-to-head edge against Gukesh’s experience in high-stakes events.
