The federal criminal case against the Southern Poverty Law Center in the Middle District of Alabama centers on an April 2026 indictment charging the organization with wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and money-laundering conspiracy for allegedly using donor funds to pay informants inside extremist groups between 2014 and 2023 without disclosure. The SPLC entered a not-guilty plea in May, filed a motion to dismiss alleging vindictive prosecution, and faced a second superseding indictment unsealed August 11, 2026, that added former official Heidi Beirich and expanded conspiracy counts. With pretrial motions ongoing and a potential trial date in late 2026, traders see a closely contested outcome where the strength of the government’s evidence and any rulings on selective prosecution remain the decisive variables.
