Lionel Messi’s inclusion in Argentina’s 55-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has anchored trader confidence at a 95% implied probability for a “Yes” outcome. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to feature regularly for both Inter Miami and the national team under Lionel Scaloni, who has publicly kept him in the selection loop while monitoring fitness at age 38. Messi has repeatedly voiced his desire to defend the title if his body holds up, a stance reinforced by recent friendlies and ongoing dialogue with coaches. Historical precedent of veteran stars extending careers for one final tournament and FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s public encouragement further bolster the consensus. Still, a late injury or abrupt retirement announcement remain plausible swing factors that could alter the outcome before the June kickoff.
