Taro Daniel enters this US Open qualifying first-round matchup as the clear favorite against American wild card Andrew Johnson, reflecting the veteran Japanese player's superior ranking (around 160-186), career-high of 58, and stronger 2026 record of 34-13 compared to the 17-year-old's 17-7. On outdoor hard courts at Flushing Meadows, Daniel's greater experience, higher hard-court win total, and consistent baseline game give him the edge in what marks their first meeting. Johnson, a highly touted young talent with a recent junior title, brings athletic upside and home-crowd energy but faces a steep step up in competition depth. Recent form shows both at 4-1 in their last five, though Daniel's schedule toughness and physical maturity anchor trader consensus on his advancement.
