Ramzan Kadyrov remains head of the Chechen Republic following a Kremlin meeting with President Vladimir Putin on April 29, 2026, where Putin publicly praised Chechen contributions to Russian military operations in Ukraine and signaled support ahead of the September 2026 regional elections. Kadyrov has confirmed his intent to seek another term if nominated by Moscow. Longstanding unverified reports of his health issues, including kidney problems and earlier hospitalizations, continue to fuel successor speculation involving his sons or ally Magomed Daudov, who was appointed acting deputy prime minister in January 2026. No official removal process or power transition has been announced, and Kadyrov maintains visible public duties and loyalist alignment with federal authorities.
