Redistricting passed by Tennessee's Republican-controlled legislature in May 2026 fundamentally altered the district's composition, removing the Memphis core that had produced consistent Democratic majorities and extending the boundaries into suburban and rural areas that favored Donald Trump by roughly 21 points in the prior cycle. The change converted the seat from a long-held Democratic stronghold—previously represented by retiring incumbent Steve Cohen—into one with an estimated Republican lean of R+9. Both parties completed primaries on August 6, nominating state Sen. Brent Taylor on the Republican side and state Rep. Justin Pearson on the Democratic side; Taylor received an endorsement from Trump while Pearson prevailed over candidates backed by the outgoing incumbent. Cook Political Report and similar nonpartisan ratings classify the November 3 general election as Solid or Likely Republican, reflecting the new partisan makeup, though the race remains on the ballot and subject to turnout dynamics in the expanded electorate.

A candidate's party will be determined by their ballot-listed or otherwise identifiable affiliation with that party at the time all of the 2026 House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources. A candidate without a ballot-listed affiliation to either the Democrat or Republican parties will be considered a member of one of these parties based on the party with which they most recently expressed their intent to caucus at the time all of the House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources.
This market will resolve based on the result of the election as indicated by a consensus of credible reporting. If there is ambiguity, this market will resolve based solely on the official results as reported by the United States government, specifically the Federal Election Commission (https://www.fec.gov/).
