The Bank of Japan's current 1.0% policy rate, held steady in an 8-1 July 30-31 decision after the June hike from 0.75%, anchors trader pricing for the September 16-17 meeting, with no change at 57.5% implied probability versus 41.5% for a 25 basis point increase. Persistent underlying inflation above the 2% target, reinforced by the central bank's July outlook warning of upside price risks and resilient domestic demand, supports the hawkish tilt that keeps a September move viable. A weaker yen and firming core CPI readings have sustained expectations for gradual normalization toward neutral levels, consistent with analyst forecasts for a year-end 1.25% rate. Market-implied odds reflect the balance between data dependence and the BoJ's communicated focus on inflation overshoots, with the upcoming meeting and fresh price releases serving as key near-term catalysts.
