**Recent Bank of Japan communications and the September 18 rate decision have anchored expectations for further normalization.** At that meeting the BOJ lifted its policy rate 25 basis points to 1.25 percent—the highest level in 31 years—by a 7-2 vote, citing upside risks to underlying CPI from energy costs tied to Middle East developments, broadening price pressures, and the ongoing wage-price pass-through. Governor Ueda emphasized that the policy focus has shifted to preventing inflation from overshooting the 2 percent target, while leaving open the possibility of consecutive or larger adjustments. Markets are pricing the December meeting as the next logical step in the gradual tightening cycle, with incoming data on core inflation, the Tankan survey, and labor-market conditions likely to determine whether the board opts for another 25-basis-point move or pauses to assess the impact of the latest hike.

Increases or decreases of less than 25 bps will be rounded to 25 bps (e.g. an increase or decrease of 10 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 25 bps). Increases or decreases of greater than 25 bps will be rounded to the nearest 25 bps and will be rounded away from 0 in cases of equidistance (e.g., an increase or decrease of 37.5 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 50 bps). Displayed options of “Increase” or “Decrease” will include policy rate increases or decreases of any size.
