Daniel Altmaier enters this clay-court opener at the Hamburg European Open with home-soil familiarity and recent success on the surface, including straight-set wins in the Valencia Challenger. The German, ranked 64, has shown improved movement and baseline consistency on slower courts this season despite an overall 4-13 main-tour record. Rinky Hijikata arrives after mixed hard-court results and one prior victory over Altmaier on a faster surface in Montreal, where the Australian’s aggressive returns proved decisive. Clay should shift emphasis toward longer rallies and endurance, areas where Altmaier’s experience at ATP 500 level may narrow the gap. No notable injuries or withdrawals have altered the draw, leaving both players at full strength for a matchup that hinges on first-strike opportunities and second-set adjustments.
