London City Lionesses opened the 2026-27 Barclays Women’s Super League season with a heavily reinforced squad backed by owner Michele Kang’s summer spending spree, featuring high-profile arrivals including two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, Daniëlle van de Donk, Mapi León, and Mary Earps under head coach Eder Maestre. Their dominant possession-based style and aggressive pressing produced an early own goal from Manchester United’s Julia Zigiotti Olme and a late van de Donk finish in the WSL curtain-raiser. United, meanwhile, entered under new manager Eva Olid following Marc Skinner’s departure, with key departures and limited pre-season cohesion leaving them without a shot on target until stoppage time despite retaining core players like Maya Le Tissier, Jess Park, and Ella Toone. Injury concerns, such as Lucía Corrales’ shoulder issue, and the visitors’ transition period shape ongoing market assessments for related outcomes.
