Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have driven energy price spikes, prompting the ECB to raise its deposit facility rate by 25 basis points to 2.25% in June 2026 and revise 2026 headline inflation projections upward to 3.0%. Subsequent July meetings held rates steady, yet President Lagarde highlighted upside risks to inflation from oil prices near $100 per barrel and broader pass-through effects into core measures. Euro-area growth forecasts remain subdued near 0.8% for 2026, but persistent services and core inflation above target have reinforced trader consensus for additional tightening. Market-implied probabilities now embed a high likelihood of another 25 basis point move at the September 10 meeting, with limited scope for cuts or larger hikes absent sharper disinflation or de-escalation.
