This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 7, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.As of mid-August 2026, USGS data record roughly 11 magnitude 7.0+ earthquakes worldwide, aligning the annual pace with the long-term average of 15–16 events driven by steady subduction-zone activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Recent events, including the August 14 M7.7 near Indonesia and the August 10 M7.4 in Colombia, plus June sequences in Venezuela and the Philippines, have occurred without M8.0+ quakes or extensive aftershock cascades that could inflate totals. Trader sentiment splits tightly between 14–16 and 17–19 outcomes because natural year-to-year variability in plate-boundary stress release leaves room for either a near-average finish or modest uptick in the final months, with USGS monitoring of seismic gaps providing the next key updates.
