Mayes Middleton secured the Republican nomination after winning the May 2026 primary runoff against Chip Roy, positioning him as the frontrunner in the open-seat contest to replace Ken Paxton. Nathan Johnson advanced as the Democratic nominee following his own runoff victory. Recent polling from late August and early September shows Middleton leading Johnson by narrow margins of five points or less among likely or registered voters, with a notable share of undecideds, reflecting tighter-than-usual dynamics in a state where Republicans have dominated attorney general races for decades. Traders appear to weigh Texas's structural Republican advantage and Middleton's self-funded primary strength more heavily than the compressed general-election polling gap, with the November 3 vote and preceding early voting period serving as the key resolution triggers.
