JoCasta Zamarripa secured the Democratic nomination unopposed in the August 2026 primary after other candidates withdrew, while Jay Schroeder prevailed in a fragmented Republican primary with roughly 47% of the vote. Sabato's Crystal Ball shifted its rating to Leans Democratic in September, citing the Democratic edge in a state Trump carried narrowly in 2024. Zamarripa's profile as a Milwaukee alderwoman and former state representative, combined with party organizational support, has bolstered trader consensus around her prospects in the November 3 general election against Schroeder, who emphasizes shifting election oversight duties to the secretary of state. The Green Party candidate and write-ins remain long shots in this battleground contest.
