Emmanuel Macron's constitutional ineligibility for a third consecutive term has opened a fragmented field for France's April 2027 presidential election, which proceeds to a potential runoff if no candidate secures a first-round majority. Recent developments include Jean-Luc Mélenchon's May 3 announcement of his fourth candidacy on the radical left, even as broader left-wing parties pursue a unitary primary to avoid vote-splitting. Center-right positioning features former prime ministers Gabriel Attal and Édouard Philippe, the latter buoyed by his recent mayoral reelection, while the far right's prospects center on Marine Le Pen's ongoing legal proceedings over alleged European Parliament irregularities and her protégé Jordan Bardella. These dynamics, alongside potential coalition negotiations, shape the evolving roster of viable ballot contenders.
