SpaceX is accelerating toward its first attempt to catch a Starship upper stage with the Mechazilla tower arms following the successful July 24, 2026 Flight 13 test, where the vehicle achieved orbit-class objectives but performed a controlled ocean splashdown. Elon Musk publicly targeted Flight 14—now slated for late August 2026—for the initial catch maneuver, building on repeated Super Heavy booster recoveries and recent V3 vehicle upgrades. This step addresses the core challenge of full two-stage reusability, with the lighter, differently contoured Ship requiring precise landing burns and arm engagement absent landing legs. Key variables for traders include regulatory approvals, final hardware validation, and SpaceX’s history of iterative timeline compression; success would mark a major leap in rapid turnaround economics ahead of planned orbital Starlink and future missions.

A successful catch is defined as the chopsticks capturing and supporting the Starship upper stage without it falling to the ground or causing catastrophic damage during the landing process.
If SpaceX attempts an ocean splashdown of the Starship upper stage instead of attempting to catch it using the Orbital Launch Tower's chopsticks, that attempt will not qualify. If no Starship launch occurs, or a successful catch does not take place, by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "No."
The resolution source for this market will be official video provided by SpaceX (https://www.youtube.com/c/SpaceX), as well as secondary video feeds and/or written reports if necessary.
