Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing US-Iran conflict that began in late February 2026, have created major supply disruptions through the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and related production shut-ins in key exporting nations. These events drove Brent crude prices sharply higher, peaking above $138 per barrel in April before recent fluctuations around $110 amid ceasefire talks and easing navigation risks. Traders are weighing the potential for sustained supply constraints against rising US exports, global inventory builds, and possible demand weakness from higher prices. Upcoming diplomatic developments or military de-escalation could quickly alter price trajectories, while renewed attacks on energy infrastructure might push benchmarks toward historical records.
