The wide-open 2028 Democratic vice-presidential field reflects the absence of a clear presidential frontrunner more than two years before primaries, leaving trader consensus dispersed across senators, governors, and rising House members. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leads at 9.5 percent due to strong progressive base support and national visibility, while Elissa Slotkin and Gretchen Whitmer follow closely on Midwest swing-state appeal and executive experience. Pete Buttigieg and Wes Moore register notable shares through communications skills and demographic outreach. Consolidation could occur once a presidential nominee emerges, as ticket-balancing incentives often elevate figures from underrepresented regions or ideological wings; 2026 midterm results and early primary polling will likely shift probabilities by highlighting viable contenders and testing name recognition against historical patterns of late-deciding running-mate selections.
