Virginia Democrats advanced a constitutional amendment and new congressional map through the General Assembly and an April 21, 2026, voter referendum to enable mid-decade redistricting ahead of the November midterms. The Virginia Supreme Court invalidated the measure on May 8, ruling that legislative procedures violated the state constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court declined an emergency appeal on May 15, leaving the existing post-2020 census district lines in place for the August primary and general election. With candidate filing deadlines approaching and no further legal avenues available to implement changes, the current 6-5 Democratic-Republican split remains fixed, aligning with traders’ strong consensus that no new map will be used.
