This followed missile and drone deployments near the chokepoint amid broader regional tensions involving Iran. Houthis have since claimed strikes on multiple Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, prompting some vessels to reroute or turn back, with reported reductions in daily transits. Disruptions remain selective rather than a blanket halt to all commercial traffic, though attacks on coastal sites like Mocha port in early August have added pressure. Trader assessments hinge on whether Houthi enforcement escalates to wider interference, countered by naval patrols or diplomatic de-escalation before sustained closure occurs.
