In July, the group declared a naval blockade targeting Saudi-linked shipping and deployed missiles and drones near the chokepoint in preparation for potential strikes, prompting some oil tankers to reroute and contributing to broader Red Sea disruptions alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. A mid-August attack on a commercial vessel killed six people, marking the first such fatalities since earlier pauses in hostilities. While preparations and selective threats have reduced traffic volumes and raised insurance risks, substantial vessel movements continue outside targeted categories, leaving effective full closure dependent on escalation decisions tied to Iranian directives or further regional strikes.
