Virginia’s attempt at mid-decade congressional redistricting for the 2026 midterms was halted by the state Supreme Court’s May 8 ruling, which invalidated the April referendum-approved constitutional amendment on procedural grounds tied to the intervening-election requirement. The U.S. Supreme Court declined further review, leaving the 2021 court-drawn maps in place. With primaries already held August 4 and the general election less than three months away, legislative or judicial avenues for a new map face insurmountable timing and constitutional barriers. Trader consensus reflects these confirmed rulings and calendar constraints. The only remaining low-probability paths involve extraordinary last-minute state or federal intervention, none of which have materialized.
