The Department of Justice’s April 2026 indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center on 11 counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, false statements, and money-laundering conspiracy—centered on alleged undisclosed payments exceeding $3 million to informants inside extremist groups—forms the core driver of current trader pricing. A second superseding indictment unsealed August 11, 2026, added former official Heidi Beirich as a defendant and raised the total counts while the case heads to a scheduled October trial in the Middle District of Alabama. The SPLC has maintained not-guilty pleas, filed motions to dismiss alleging vindictive prosecution, and contested the government’s characterization of its informant program. These competing factors—formal charges and prosecutorial momentum versus active defense challenges and the requirement of proof beyond reasonable doubt—produce the near-even 55.5% implied probability for a guilty outcome in 2026.
