Recent strength in Canadian employment data, including July 2026 gains of 75,100 jobs that far exceeded expectations alongside a drop in the unemployment rate to 6.4%, has narrowed US-Canada yield differentials and supported CAD appreciation, pushing USD/CAD to approximately 1.386 as of August 17. This contrasts with softer US payrolls and downward revisions, tempering Federal Reserve tightening bets while elevating prospects for Bank of Canada policy firmness amid elevated energy prices. Market-implied odds reflect trader consensus on these divergences, with forecasts from major banks centering USD/CAD around 1.37–1.40 by year-end 2026 amid tariff risks and inflation trajectories. Key upcoming catalysts include August CPI releases, potential BoC communications, and USMCA-related developments that could further shift rate expectations and risk sentiment.
