Uncertainty surrounding Patrick Mahomes' recovery from a torn ACL suffered in December 2025 has created a competitive quarterback race for the Chiefs' Week 1 starter in 2026, with trader consensus favoring the franchise QB at 61.5% implied probability despite his progress. Chiefs GM Brett Veach confirmed on May 5 that Mahomes is ahead of schedule, but NFL physically unable to perform list rules could delay his offseason participation, fueling doubt ahead of the MNF opener against the Broncos. Recent roster moves bolster alternatives: March trade for Justin Fields (42.5%), interest in veteran Joe Flacco (44.9%), reported signing of Gardner Minshew (44.4%) as backup, and Chris Oladokun's (36.3%) 2025 starts when filling in, reflecting the wisdom of crowds hedging on Mahomes' readiness amid a crowded depth chart.

If the Chiefs do not name a single player as the starting quarterback, the market will resolve based on the player who takes the most snaps at quarterback during their first offensive drive of the game. If multiple players take the same number of snaps on the Chiefs’ first offensive drive, the market will resolve to the player who took the first snap at quarterback.
This market may not resolve before the start of the Chiefs’ Week 1 regular season game.
The resolution sources for this market will be official information from the NFL (NFL.com); however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
