Late April remarks from Google Cloud's CEO signaling a new Gemini model "very, very soon" have heightened expectations, particularly with Google I/O set for May 19-20 potentially featuring announcements or previews. A Sergey Brin-led strike team is training the model on Google's internal codebase to boost coding prowess, aiming to close gaps with rivals like OpenAI's GPT series and Anthropic's Claude Opus in benchmarks for long-context reasoning and complex engineering tasks. Leaks highlight advanced features such as generating over 3,000 lines of coherent code, but historical release patterns suggest measured pacing amid competitive pressures.
