Apple's pursuit of CXMT DRAM stems from the ongoing consumer memory shortage, as AI-driven demand has shifted capacity at Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, pushing contract prices sharply higher and prompting Apple to raise device pricing in mid-2026. The company has lobbied the Trump administration for clearance to source from the blacklisted Chinese DRAM maker and begun qualification testing for iPhone and MacBook components aimed at the China market. However, CXMT operates at 95% utilization with capacity fully committed through 2027 primarily to domestic clients like Huawei, leaving minimal room for new large-scale Apple orders amid geopolitical risks and potential further export controls. These supply and regulatory barriers underpin the market's lean toward no meaningful 2026 purchases.
