The longstanding single-tournament goal record of 13, set by Just Fontaine in 1958, continues to stand untouched amid modern defensive organization, improved goalkeeping, and structured squad rotation that limit individual scoring opportunities across seven or eight matches maximum. Recent editions, including the 2022 tournament where the Golden Boot winner tallied just eight goals, underscore how even prolific forwards rarely approach double digits in a single World Cup. The 2026 expansion to 48 teams and additional fixtures has boosted total tournament goals but has not altered the structural barriers for any one player. With the event underway, early match data aligns with historical scoring rates, reinforcing trader consensus around the low probability of a breakthrough. Unlikely shifts could stem from an exceptional run by a top striker advancing deep while facing unusually porous defenses or extended extra-time scenarios.
