Manchester City Women enter their 2026-27 WSL opener as defending champions hosting newly promoted Birmingham City at the Joie Stadium, backed by a dominant head-to-head record of 10 wins in the last 11 meetings across competitions. City strengthened with arrivals including Beth Mead and Niamh Charles while retaining Khadija Shaw, though Vivianne Miedema’s knee injury sidelines her for the early weeks. Birmingham secured promotion via the WSL2 title but face an immediate test after selling 11 players and integrating WSL-experienced additions like Millie Turner, Lisa Naalsund, and Sophie Baggaley under Amy Merricks. The fixture marks Birmingham’s return to the top flight after four seasons, with City expected to leverage home advantage, squad depth, and recent title momentum against a side adjusting to the higher level.
