Ira Sachs’ “The Man I Love” sits atop trader consensus thanks to strong early critical reception for its lush, AIDS-era musical fantasia and Rami Malek’s lead turn, positioning the indie auteur for a potential breakthrough Palme after a decade-long Cannes absence. Pawel Pawlikowski’s black-and-white post-WWII drama “Fatherland,” featuring Sandra Hüller, and Na Hong-jin’s high-stakes Korean sci-fi thriller “Hope” trail closely, buoyed by their directors’ prestige and star power. Momentum remains fluid as the competition slate continues premiering, with guild-style jury deliberations and final-night screenings poised to shift implied probabilities before the May 23 announcement.
