With screenings underway at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, early critical reception has elevated Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland and Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden as the clearest frontrunners for the Palme d’Or. Pawlikowski’s controlled, postwar drama has drawn praise for its artistic discipline, while Hamaguchi’s first non-Japanese feature benefits from his prior awards momentum. The international jury led by Park Chan-wook faces a crowded field that includes previous Palme winners like Cristian Mungiu and Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose latest entries add prestige but lack the same immediate buzz. Traders appear to be weighting post-premiere reactions and auteur track records most heavily as the competition heads into its final week.
