Emmanuel Macron's constitutional term limits bar him from seeking a third consecutive mandate in the April 2027 presidential election, opening a fragmented field. Marine Le Pen faces a five-year public office ban following her 2025 embezzlement conviction, which she is appealing and which could clear the path for National Rally protégé Jordan Bardella. Jean-Luc Mélenchon confirmed his fourth candidacy in early May 2026, while left-wing parties pursue a unitary primary to consolidate support. Center-right figures including Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal have signaled bids, with the Republicans nominating Bruno Retailleau. Early polling and candidate positioning ahead of the first-round vote will shape which contenders ultimately appear on the ballot.
