Recent developments in the Middle East conflict have sustained upward pressure on euro area energy prices, supporting the ECB's September 2026 rate hike to a 2.50% deposit facility rate and staff projections of 3.0% average headline inflation for 2026. Resilient euro area growth, revised higher in the latest projections, and limited evidence of easing wage pressures have reinforced trader expectations for further tightening. Major banks including Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley now anticipate an additional 25 basis point move at the December meeting, aligning with the 58% market pricing for that outcome. Persistent geopolitical risks to energy costs remain the dominant near-term driver, while the 29% probability on no change reflects uncertainty over the conflict's duration and potential data moderation ahead of the October and December decisions.
