Tech giants are accelerating plans for orbital AI data centers to sidestep terrestrial limits on power and cooling, with recent milestones shaping trader views on timelines. Google’s November 2025 Suncatcher project outlines solar-powered satellite constellations using custom TPUs and optical interlinks for scalable machine learning compute, while Starcloud’s November 2025 launch of an NVIDIA H100-equipped prototype demonstrated the first AI model training and Gemini inference in orbit. NVIDIA followed in March 2026 by unveiling its Space-1 Vera Rubin module at GTC for radiation-tolerant inference workloads. SpaceX and Blue Origin have signaled large-scale constellations, and Google is now in active launch discussions with SpaceX. Key near-term catalysts include Lonestar’s October 2026 StarVault storage service and multiple 2027 test missions focused on AI inference rather than full-scale training.

“Orbital data center” refers to any spacecraft, satellite, or equivalent technology carrying computing infrastructure that is launched into Earth’s orbit for the purpose of providing data-center, cloud-computing, or artificial intelligence computing services and which includes at least 100 data-center-grade AI accelerators, GPUs, TPUs, or substantially equivalent compute processors, (e.g. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Google TPUs, or equivalent or successor chips).
“Successfully launched” refers to any launch which successfully places a qualifying orbital data center into Earth’s orbit.
