Anwar Ibrahim continues to lead Malaysia's unity government coalition of Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, and East Malaysian parties, with the next general election due by early 2028. Recent state-level setbacks, including defeats in Sabah in late 2025 and Negeri Sembilan and Johor in 2026, have highlighted eroding support and coalition frictions, prompting a December 2025 cabinet reshuffle to rebalance portfolios and retain East Malaysian backing. Internal PKR defections and ministerial exits have fueled speculation over snap polls, though Anwar has conditioned any early vote on managing divisions while advancing reforms such as the failed prime ministerial term-limit amendment. Economic pressures from subsidy rationalization and cost-of-living concerns add to the assessment of coalition stability.
