Lorenzo Sonego enters this Geneva Open first-round clay-court matchup as the clear favorite against qualifier Edas Butvilas, drawing on his greater ATP experience and stronger recent form despite a 3-4 record so far in 2026. Sonego has navigated clay events steadily this spring, though he exited early in Rome. Butvilas, ranked around 256, arrives with fresh momentum after a dominant qualifying run that included a 6-4 6-1 victory over Alexandre Muller on May 16. The surface favors Sonego’s baseline game and court coverage, while Butvilas will look to exploit any early nerves or footwork lapses from the veteran. Historical patterns on clay suggest the higher-ranked player holds a significant edge unless the qualifier sustains breakthrough form through the opening sets.
