Recent Houthi threats to restrict access through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, amid renewed Iran-related tensions, have elevated risks to this critical chokepoint linking the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. The waterway normally facilitates roughly 12 percent of global oil shipments and a substantial share of Asia-Europe container traffic, prompting major carriers to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope. This shift has driven up freight rates, lengthened transit times by up to two weeks, and increased war-risk insurance premiums, directly pressuring supply-chain costs and energy price benchmarks. Traders are monitoring any resumption of targeted attacks or formal blockades, alongside potential de-escalation signals from ongoing regional diplomacy that could restore normal vessel flows.
