A federal grand jury in Alabama indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center in April 2026 on 11 counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging the organization used donor funds to pay confidential informants tied to extremist groups without proper disclosure. Prosecutors obtained superseding indictments in June and August 2026, expanding allegations to include additional defendants and details on over $4 million in transfers. The SPLC entered a not guilty plea, moved to dismiss the case citing vindictive prosecution, and faces ongoing pretrial proceedings in the Middle District of Alabama. These confirmed DOJ actions under the current administration, combined with the organization's defense strategy and unresolved motions, underpin trader assessments of conviction odds near even as the case advances toward potential 2026 resolution.
