Ongoing US-Iran tensions, including naval blockades and sanctions enforcement since the February 2026 conflict, continue to pressure Iran's economy through restricted oil exports and capital outflows. These factors have driven the rial to trade near 1.81 million per USD in parallel markets as of mid-May, amid sustained inflation above 50 percent and fiscal deficits. Trader consensus reflects limited scope for rapid further depreciation by May 31 given the short timeline, though any escalation in military actions, diplomatic breakdowns, or sudden shifts in oil supply could alter exchange-rate momentum before the deadline. Historical patterns show rial weakness accelerates during periods of heightened sanctions or energy disruptions, yet recent data indicate relative stability in daily movements absent new catalysts.
