Recent moderation in Canadian headline CPI, which eased to 2.8% year-over-year in June 2026 from 3.2% in May amid sharply lower gasoline prices, has reinforced trader expectations for annual average inflation near the Bank of Canada’s updated 2.5% projection for the full year. The July Monetary Policy Report highlighted elevated near-term pressures from earlier energy price spikes but little change to the medium-term outlook of gradual easing toward the 2% target, with core measures already at multi-year lows. Consensus forecasts cluster around 2.5–2.6%, supporting the 39.9% implied probability on the 2.5–2.9% band while leaving scope for modest upside from persistent shelter costs or downside if growth remains subdued. The August 17 CPI release and September BoC decision represent near-term catalysts that could refine these market-implied odds.
