The high trader consensus against formal abolition of the Department of Education before 2027 stems from the structural requirement for congressional legislation to repeal the 1979 statute establishing the agency. The Trump administration has advanced downsizing through executive actions, workforce reductions, and interagency transfers of functions such as civil rights enforcement and special education programs, yet these steps fall short of statutory elimination. Bipartisan measures advancing in the Senate HELP Committee and House to block further transfers or closure have gained traction, while Democratic opposition and midterm dynamics limit prospects for the necessary majorities. Late-session appropriations riders, court rulings on related policies, or shifts in Senate vote counts could still alter timelines within the resolution window.

If the US Department of Education is merged with another agency, resulting in a consolidated department with a shared administrative structure which is no longer titled the Department of Education it will count as a "Yes" resolution.
If it becomes impossible for Trump to sign legislation/perform executive actions (e.g. he resigns), this market will resolve to "No".
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the US government, however a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.
