Žiga Šeško, the 17-year-old Slovenian who captured the 2026 Australian Open boys’ singles title and Wimbledon boys’ doubles crown, faces a steep test against Spain’s Daniel Mérida Aguilar in the Croatia Open qualifying or main-draw opener on clay. Mérida, ranked No. 84 with a career-high of 82, brings ATP-level experience and a 6-5 record in 2026, while Šeško holds an ATP ranking near 934 and limited senior results. Surface familiarity, physical maturity, and pro match toughness favor the Spaniard, though Šeško’s recent junior dominance and 1.92 m frame suggest upside in longer rallies. The outcome hinges on whether the teenager’s athleticism can offset the ranking and experience gap in best-of-three sets.
